Several Great Freeware Applications, Page 2February 1st, 2008

Hamachi/LogmeinLogmein and Hamachi Review

Official Page

Both of these softwares are made by the same company, and satisfy somewhat similar needs, so I figured I would put them together. Hamachi is a free file transfer software that allows you to transfer files between computers through the internet via your shared files. It's a small application that works incredibly well. The other software, logmein, is a website accessible remote control software. Simply install the software on the machine you want to be able to control and you will have control from anywhere you have internet access. One disadvantage is that the free version does not allow for file transfers. If you feel like paying for it(I know, I said freeware) you can have access to the file transfer ability. However, the free version works great, and teamed up with Hamachi, you have almost all the functionality of the pay version.

GIMP - GNU Image Manipulation Program

Official Site

GIMP, or GNU Image Manipulation Program, is a free photo editing/creation software. Think of this software as the free, more basic version of Photoshop. It does a great job of photo manipulation and creation, and is a great tool to have at your disposal if you are just doing GIMP Reviewsome basic photo editing(and works well even for some of the more advanced things as well). I highly recommend this software as a starting place for photo editing, especially since if you don't like it, all you have to do is uninstall it. One of the things I had difficulty with in the past was the interface, and getting familiar with the location of certain tools. However, it is an incredibly useful tool for anyone who takes pictures.

More Common Freeware

There are a few freewares out there that most people are familiar with, and many even use. So instead of talking about these and doing a mini review of them I'm just going to list them briefly and their main function:

  • Firefox: Web Browser
  • Thunderbird: Email
  • uTorrent: Bit-torrent mangement software
  • Linux: Operating System
  • GAIM/Pidgin: Instant Messenger(functions with AIM,MSN,Yahoo,Google talk, and more)
  • Winamp: Media(Music) Player
  • Open Office: Office Productivity Suite
  • I'm sure there are more out there, but these are some of the major ones.
